Yungang Grottoes are located in the south of Wuzhou mountain north bank of Ten-Mile River. It is about sixteen kilometers to the west of Datong, Shanxi Province, P.R.China.

It's a historic monument combing the Chinese culture with Western one as ?it is a Buddhist art treasure house of royal style, which a nationality has spent nearly a dynasty completing for the first time ever since the Buddhist art was spread to China. It was promulgated ?one of the first group of ?key cultural relics preservation units?by the State Council in March 1961. Yungang Grottoes were inscribed into the World Cultural Heritage List by the UNESCO?In December 2001? and became ?first group of ?5A levet Chinese Tourist Areas in May 2007.

Yungang Grottoes are open to public from 8:30am.to 5:30pm. in summer(from April 1st to October 15th )and open to public from 8:30 am. to 5:00 pm. in winter (from October 16th? to March 31st)each year.?

The inscription of Yungang Grottoes into the World Culture Heritage list in 2001 has brought protection and research of the Yungang Grottoes a new phase of development.

Yungang Grottoes is one of three large grottoes. At prestent, Yungang Grottoes, stretched about 1 kilometers from east to west, has reserved 254 niches with varing sizes, 45 caves, and around 51000 statues.
